Programs: PEG National Multi-Year Equity Strategies for K12 Districts

Full Description | Strategy Descriptions | District Forums

Strategy Descriptions

In order for a multi-year equity strategy to produce measurable change in student achievement, the district must carefully construct a series of processes that are coherent and align with existing programmatic and strategic priorities. Ultimately, the equity initiative should function more as a lens through which pedagogical reforms are viewed rather than an “add-on” program or “another project” the district is “dumping on” site personnel. Although no two districts are identical, the challenges that many districts face in terms of equity are quite similar. The following process strategies outline ways in which districts convert equity theory to equity action.

Central Office Planning

Monthly meetings involving the superintendent, curriculum and professional development directors and principal representatives are aimed at surfacing current and critical issues. Scheduled “check-ins” with all levels of the system enable planners to design effective equity leadership training that is aligned with other district priorities and demands. These meetings do not take the place of ongoing communication and support between sites and the central office, but they do help to institutionalize the process of ongoing equity focus, planning and accountability. Occasionally, the superintendent may call for individual consultation to discuss progress of district and/or challenges that individual personnel may be facing.
