Process for Collaborating School Leadership Teams

I. Collect Data

Using SAT 9 results, the C.A.R.E. team provides a statistical picture of classroom/school/district achievement disaggregated by:

• Race/Ethnicity
• Grade Level
• Gender
• Student Name

Since the research focus will stem from SAT 9 data analysis/ interpretation and since this is also the statewide measure by which schools/districts are assessed for quality of instruction and student learning, SAT 9 will serve as the “prompting learning measure”.

II. Determine a Focus Area

Based on the school’s or district’s academic focus areas (e.g., literacy, mathematics) for the year as defined in a school site plan, WASC/PQR report or district strategic plan, the C.A.R.E. team designates the area most in need of improvement for the year’s focus.

III. Align Focus with (California) Standards

The C.A.R.E. team identifies the specific literacy or mathematics standards and benchmarks to clarify the learning outcome in the focus area.

IV. Draft Statement of Concern

Within the academic focus area, the C.A.R.E. team articulates the concerns the data raises about the identified standards and benchmarks.

V. Defining the Focus Group(s)

The C.A.R.E. team identifies the group(s) of students of color for whom the rate of achievement needs to be accelerated in order to close the achievement gap and eliminate performance disproportionality and predictability.
