Dare to Be Real
West Metro Education Program (WMEP) conducts several student-learning programs for students who attend its member districts. The most popular student learning program is Dare 2 Be Real, which promotes, addresses, and discusses racial equity and anti-racist leadership. Students undergo intensive training and structured discussions that are intended to prepare a new generation to tackle these difficult conversations in the midst of rapidly changing demographics.
In the Dare 2 Be Real program, students explore their own racial and cultural identity through their study of critical race theory, United States History, and the development of racial identity Students in Dare 2 Be Real have made presentations at local and national educational conferences including the Summit for Courageous Conversations about Race in Baltimore, Maryland. These students have also led retreat experiences for elementary students to help them address issues involving racial conflict and bullying. Additional Program Information

Lawrence Public Schools – Can We Talk?
The “Can We Talk” Group Mentoring Initiative will take several successful, professional adult African American men into Lawrence’s local high schools and allow them to develop productive mentorships and create a student-focus environment in order to provide guidance and insights to young African American and other “at risk” male and female students.
This Initiative is designed to address the student’s academic achievement; to assist the student in developing goals that will produce positive scholastic and social behaviors; to address and enhance the student’s self-image; to deter the student from truancy, crime, delinquency and drug use; and to assist the student in developing and practicing successful life skills. During the next semester and the next school year, the mentors and students will address many issues that pertain to the intellectual, social and cultural development of the student. Learn More |
